“Show up scared, and prove your courage.” 🙌🏻💙 - lovely words from my friend @jamievaron // Fear and anxiety are normal reactions, our brain signaling us of potential danger. Or maybe just of things outside of our comfort zone, uncomfortable things that will push and prod and grow us. . That process isn’t always fun - in fact, it’s normally quite scary. It’s the feeling of standing in front of an unknown wilderness that’s cloaked in fog, and knowing that there is nowhere to go but forward. Fear is that dreadful, hollow, paralyzing feeling, but bravery is taking the first step into that unknown, despite the fear. You don’t have to be fearless, you just can’t let fear stop you from chasing what you want. . And the results might not be perfect. But perfection isn’t - and shouldn’t - be the goal. If I had waited to start sharing my work until I felt ‘brave enough’, I’d still be waiting. Even now, I sometimes feel the fear creep in whenever I send an important email, or have to stop and take a deep breath right before I hit that ‘share’ button to let a new lettering piece out in the world. But I’m doing the dang thing anyway. Scared, but still brave. Anxious, yet courageous. Flawed, but we’re trying. That’s what makes us human. ✨💙 . This whole album is mesmerizing. I actually remember getting a burned CD of it for my 15th birthday from a friend with impeccable taste (shout out to Ashley). I listened to it religiously. . Amy Winehouse was totally her own person and besides her insane vocals, her style was badass. She said, “I just dress like I'm an old Jewish black man. I just dress like it's still the '50s”. Well, she definitely made it work 🖤 . I tried to make this piece big and bold, like her beehive hair. Not as much detail as some of the other pieces, but eye-catching with all that contrast.
